The Ship-to-Shore Science Girl Scouts Project
The Ship-to-Shore Science Girl Scouts Project
The Ship-to-Shore Science Girl Scouts pilot project was funded within a grant from the National Science Foundation to the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. To increase girls' interest, persistence and achievement in science, technology and engineering, particularly earth science and careers at sea, the program introduced Girl Scout Cadettes (grades 6-8) to the science of the JOIDES Resolution, an international ocean research vessel via three hands-on science workshops and optional additional sessions, culminating in a live video-conference with scientists, engineers and education officers aboard the ship. Materials have been adapted from resources by Deep Earth Academy and science teachers around the country, and developed through collaborations between the Girl Scouts of New York City and K. Thomson, Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ and Rutgers University, and Girl Scouts in Virginia with the Virginia Museum of Natural History.
A free copy of the Facilitator's Guide to the Ship-to-Shore Science Girl Scout Workshops, including lesson plans, multimedia resources, handouts, and suggested links to Girl Scout recognitions, Journeys, and Program Aide service is available for download on this web site. (The file is downloaded as a "compressed folder." To access the Guide itself, download the compressed folder, right-click on the folder, and select "extract all." The Guide will appear as a new folder. If this doesn't work, please contact us for further instructions or to request a DVD version, available in limited quantities.)
We hope you'll share this resource with your Girl Scout council and with other organizations or teachers who want to encourage young people's interests in STEM fields and careers at sea.
